India’s renewable energy sector is poised for significant growth, with top corporations lining up ambitious projects to meet climate goals. However, the industry faces a talent shortage, with a current skills gap of approximately 1.2 million. By 2027, talent demand in this sector is expected to surge by 26%, potentially creating 1.7 million direct and indirect jobs.

Sumit Kumar, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship’s Chief Strategy Officer, notes the importance of apprenticeships in filling this gap. "Reskilling and developing a robust entry-level workforce through apprenticeships are essential to meet the sector’s expanding needs." Apprenticeship programs offer the renewable energy industry a sustainable talent pipeline, ensuring that employees are ready to contribute effectively from day one.

Indian employers are increasingly recognizing the value apprentices bring to their workforce, both in terms of cost-effectiveness and talent development. By integrating apprentices into their talent strategy, companies are able to manage labor costs more efficiently while also cultivating a pool of skilled, job-ready talent. This strategic approach not only fills immediate roles but also strengthens long-term workforce resilience.

The power and energy sector stands out as one of the industries making the most significant strides in apprentice engagement. According to our latest Apprenticeship Outlook Report, approximately 80% of employers in this sector expressed a strong intent to expand their apprenticeship programs even further. This trend reflects the sector’s growing commitment to building a technically proficient workforce that can meet the demands of this rapidly evolving industry.

Through structured apprenticeship programs, power and energy companies are ensuring a steady supply of skilled talent, trained specifically to meet industry standards and operational requirements. This investment in apprenticeships not only contributes to cost savings on hiring and training but also enhances productivity and retention rates, making it a vital component of talent strategy in the power and energy landscape.

Apprenticeships not only provide on-the-job learning but also support the sector’s goal of building a skilled, future-ready workforce for a sustainable India.
