The aviation sector, a crucial driver of global connectivity and economic growth, finds itself at a pivotal juncture. With its resurgence following the pandemic and an anticipated expansion, there is a pressing need for a skilled workforce to support this ambitious growth trajectory. Currently, the aviation sector contributes to 5% of the country's GDP and has generated around 4 million jobs. Moreover, it remains a top choice for job seekers.

Expansion of the Aviation Sector in India

India is poised to surpass both China and the US in the air passenger market by 2030, as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The number of operational airports in India has surged from 74 in 2014 to 148 in 2023, reflecting this rapid growth. Additionally, the industry is set to acquire at least 1,100 new aircraft. Consequently, the workforce in the aviation sector is expected to grow from 250,000 to 350,000 in 2024.

Skills Gap in the Aviation Sector in India

Despite this growth, the aviation sector is grappling with a significant challenge: the skills gap. Currently, the industry faces a 17% skills gap, which is projected to rise to 25% by the end of this fiscal year. This skills gap in the aviation sector directly impacts all critical roles.

The shortage is especially pronounced in technical roles, with skill gaps ranging from 32% to 43% across specialties like service engineering, AI, and blockchain. Non-technical roles also exhibit considerable gaps, from 38% to 41%, underscoring the extensive nature of the skills shortage in aviation.

Aviation Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship programs offer a strategic solution to bridge the skills gap in the aviation sector. These programs provide a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on experience. By integrating classroom education with real-world training, apprenticeships equip individuals with essential technical skills and industry-relevant qualifications.

Benefits of Apprenticeships for Employers

Employers gain numerous benefits from apprenticeship programs. Beyond the immediate productivity of learners, apprenticeships offer significant non-monetary advantages, such as reduced turnover, enhanced talent strategy and a steady pipeline of skilled workers. Over 12-24 months, apprenticeships can improve employee retention by 25% and cut talent acquisition costs by 50%. Additionally, employers often see a 20% to 25% increase in employee productivity.

Work-based learning programs, including apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships, are effective solutions to address the skills gap in the aviation sector and build a skilled, future-ready workforce.
