India’s demographic advantage, 65% of the population within the employable age range, presents a unique opportunity. However, a significant challenge lies in preparing this workforce to meet industry needs. Only 47% of technical graduates and 22% of non-technical graduates are currently employable, indicating the need for industry-aligned skills.

India has vast, largely untapped potential when it comes to apprenticeships. Around the world, many countries have embraced the power of learning through practical experience, fostering work-ready skills while allowing individuals to earn an income as they train. These nations have long relied on systems that pass down skills through hands-on training, a tradition that in India dates back centuries to the guru-shishya, or mentor-mentee, model. However, while apprenticeships have proven transformative in several economies, their success varies widely, offering India valuable insights on the factors that contribute to effective training programs.

Our report, Reimagining Employability for the 21st Century, dives into apprenticeship models across key countries, shedding light on the fundamentals of effective programs and the role apprenticeships play in enhancing youth employability. Through this analysis, we highlight actionable strategies for creating impactful apprenticeships that can equip India’s young workforce with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.

Sumit Kumar, Chief Strategy Officer of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, emphasizes that apprenticeships are instrumental for fostering practical, job-ready skills among students. Programs like Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) have trained over 14 million individuals, while NAPS has significantly boosted apprenticeship enrollments from 2 lakh in FY 2019-20 to 9.4 lakh today.

Apprenticeship programs can bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness, providing Indian youth with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive global economy.
